Performance

Recovery
Aside from pain from the contractions, sprains and other injuries, intensive muscle exertion can be accompanied by muscle fatigue, swelling and soreness.
There are two common kinds of exercise-related soreness. One is acute, which occurs during or immediately after exercise; the other is delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which peaks 48 hours after exercise.
Caused by fatigue, acute soreness during or immediately after exercise is caused by the build-up of waste by-products. DOMS is caused by tearing of the muscle fibers. DOMS causes swelling, pressure, stiffness and worsens pain, resulting in an extended recovery time, poor performance and a greater risk for future injuries.
