- Our Answer:
Hello, if you suffer from stress or urge incontinence, then you will be eligible to VAT exemption, and should choose the ex-VAT option. If you are using the AthenaFem simply to improve muscle tone in the pelvic floor (for example, to improve the vaginal embrace) then you will not be eligible to receive VAT exemption.
With any VAT exempt purchases we send a form for you to fill in - it is a self-certification form and does not need a doctor's signature. Many thanks.

- Question: is this product good for after you have a baby and feel very loose down below...plus im always getting air explosions down there also.please help iv got twins age 5 mnths and feel to big for my hushband
- Our Answer:
Hi, the PelviTone is excellent at training the pelvic floor after childbirth (once all healing has occurred). It will help tighten the vaginal embrace, meaning you and your husband will be able to have more feeling during sex, and will also help tone up the pelvic floor muscles, improving continence. Mnay thanks
- Question: can you use the athena fem if you have a prolapse
- Our Answer:
Hello,
We would normally always advise women to check with their doctor first if they have a prolapse, as we cannot give medical advice. If the doctor is happy for you to use a pelvic toner -and in the main they are - then the AthenaFem would be beneficial with helping with your prolapse. The pelvic toners help firm up and tone all muscles in the pelvic floor area, so this should help your muscles retain a prolapse. Many thanks
- Question: how do you use the muscle trainer, does it go internally.
- Our Answer:
Hello, yes the AthenaFem trainer is designed to be inserted into the vagina, where the pelvic floor muscles are exercised by the electrical impulses. Many thanks
- Question: I have had my device for a couple of years and did feel pulsation in the beginning, but after a break in usage, I feel nothing now. I have read in Q & A that the trainer might need a replacement battery. Is there any way I can test whether it is still pulsating? gktak
- Our Answer:
Hello, in order to check whether the trainer is still operating, you can try placing the trainer in the crook of your arm and see if the pulses still come through there. You may need to moisten the area slightly to better feel any pulses the trainer is emitting.
If not, as you are out of the guarantee period you can contact Athena directly on the number given in the handbook regarding a replacement trainer. Many thanks
- Question: will the athenafem help with a minor prolapse, doing pelvic floor atm but not very effective ,so fed up of wanting the loo every 5mins.Gp not much help tbh.
- Our Answer:
Hello, in most cases a pelvic toner such as the Athena Fem will help with a minor prolapse, as it helps strenghten the muscle tissue across the whole of the pelvic floor area. However, we always recommend that you speak with your doctor or nurse to check that they are happy for you to use a pelvic trainer. Many thanks
- Question: I do not have either form of incontinence but have a slipped disc and have been told to do Pelvic Floor exercises. Which product would be most suitable?
- Our Answer:
Hello Janet, any of the pelvic toners that work by electrical stimulation would be suitable - the AthenaFem is one of our most popular units as it is wireless, and will help you tone up the pelvic floor. Many thanks
- Question: What is the life span of the machine? Does the probe need replacing at any time?
- Our Answer:
Hello, the AthenaFem comes with a manufacturer's 1 year warranty, and they advise that the sealed battery in the trainer has a life of about two years. They advise when it needs a replacement to contact their customer service. The batteries in the main unit are standard AAA batteries. Many thanks
- Question: I have just bought your product and used it twice. I am having to have it on nearly max strengh to feel anything anything at all. Is that right? or I am doing something wrong?
- Our Answer:
Hello, it is not uncommon for women to be unable to feel the electrical impulses generated by a pelvic floor exercisers. Quite often the nerves in the vagina have been damaged (especially if you have had children) and cannot feel the pulses. This often inproves with time.
The best way to get a feel for how it works is to place the trainer in the crook of your elbow - you will see that ramping the charge up to maximum is really not necessary (or advised if you cannot feel the strength of the pulses). Be assured it will be working for you, but you may not be able the pulses for a while. Many thanks
- Question: hi i've just had my second child 6 weeks ago. i've had stress incontinence throughout pregnancy and now have a slight prolapse. Will this help my situation and when can i use it?
thanks
- Our Answer:
Hello, normally we recommend that you give the pelvic floor a month or two to recover from the trauma of childbirth, and for any tissue or tears to heal. After that, a Pelvic Toner such as the AthenaFem can help build up muscle strenght and will certainly help with your stress incontinence. As far as the prolapse goes, a pelvic toner may well help with building the muscle strength needed to retain a prolapse and help repair the area. However, we do recommend that you check with your midwife, doctor or nurse prior to using the pelvic toner for treatment of a prolapse. Many thanks
- Question: I would like to invest in this device to strengthen the muscle to improve my sexual activity for my partner. This hasn't been mentioned in ur literature so unwed to know that this is the correct device to purchase. The other benefits have sold it to me but the above is my original reason for my enquiryz
- Our Answer:
Hello, the AthenaFem will help tighten the vaginal embrace, which in turn will lead to improved sensitivity and heighten the sensation during lovemaking for both partners. Many thanks
- Question: Hi, I have the Athena but am not sure if it is working properly. The green light goes on and then off after the 15 min session but I cannot feel any fluttering or tingling or any sensation whatsoever even on the highest setting. I know my pelvic floor is very weak - is this the reason or is it not working properly? I have tried repositioning it but it makes no difference. Many thanks
- Our Answer:
Hello, it is quite common when women first start using a pelvic toner that they are not able to feel the pulses generated by the toner. The muscles are still being stimulated, so you will be receiving the benefit of the pulses. Over time you may hopefully be able to detect more of the pulses as the condition of your pelvic muscles improves. In oreder to see how the pulses work, we recommend that you test the trainer in the crook of your arm - you will see then that the pulses are quite strong, so we would advise against simply ramping up the pulse strength within the vagina. Many thanks
- Question: Do I need doctor approval to purchase the AthenaFem - VAT Exempt from the USA?
- Our Answer:
Hello, no you do not need a doctor to sign for VAT exemption - the form is a self-certification form. However, the USA does not get charged VAT anyway! Many thanks
- Question: Will the Athena Fem also help with a suspected 2nd stage prolapsed uterus?
- Our Answer:
Hello, for this one you would really need to speak to your doctor or gynaecologist for their advice - we would not be able to advise you on this I'm afraid. Many thanks
- Question: Hi
I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago would the pelvic toner be effective and safe to use?
- Our Answer:
Hello, if your hysterectomy was 10 years agi then you will be fine to use a pelvic toner. We normally advise women who have had the procedure to wait until they have completely recovered, so in your case it would be fine to use it now. Many thanks
- Question: Can the Athena help with a prolapse (cystocele)?
- Our Answer:
Hello, We have been advised that Pelvic Toners can be used in cases where a prolapse has occurred, so long as the vagina can actually have the trainer inserted. However, we do strongly suggest you check with your GP first, who will be able to give you advice specific to your condition. Many thanks

- Our Answer:
Hello, we would always advise that you speak first with your doctor or gynaecologist for their advice as all prolapses are different, but the AthenaFem will help in building the muscles of the pelvic floor and area which may be of benefit in the case of a prolapse. As we say, though - check with your GP or specialist first. Many thanks

- Question: can athenafem be used whilst I'm pregnant?

In our opinion, it is the most advanced pelvic toner available. Many thanks

- Our Answer:
Hello, the AthenaFem is designed to be used either once or twice a day - most women use the AthenaFem twice a day and start seeing results as soon as 8-12 weeks after starting to use it. Many thanks

- Our Answer:
Hello, the AthenFem may well help with your overactive bladder, especially if used in combination with bladder training - your doctor, nurse or continence advisor will be able to advise you on how to do this training and if it is for you. Many thanks
- Question: My question is around the cordless bit. If there are no cords, how is the device removed from the vagina? Do you have to reach up in there to remove it?
- Our Answer:
Hi, you can reach up there and remove it, everyone is different as to how far the probe needs to be inserted. However, there is a small hoop where you can feed through a piece of floss, cotton or string of your choice for easier removal. Thanks
- Question: i havent had children or have a bladdder problem but i have week pelvic muscles and would like to be a bit tighter would the AthenaFem be the best product for me ?
- Our Answer:
AthenaFem is a simple, easy to use product that utilises wireless technology - but this does not mean you can don roller skates and ride around the park while using it. It is a great product, yes. However, if money is an object you may want to consider the PelviTone - functionally richer - comes with 9 or more pre-set programmes including the overall pelvic floor workout programme which is great for vaginal embrace. You can find this on our site of course. However, lots of women like the AthenaFem due to it's simple use and wireless probe. Personally, though, for vaginal embrace improvements I'd go for the PelviTone as it has a programme good for that and you can tweak that programme as you go along too!. Thanks, Sharon
- Question: I am experiencing slight discomfort using the Athena Fem - is this normal?
- Our Answer:
Firstly, if you have had children, you may have some scarring which will heal over time. At first, using the Athena Fem on these scars may be slightly uncomfortable, so it is best to use it on a low setting and work up over a period of time as the scar breaks down. Secondly, you may be inserting the probe too high as this can cause slight discomfort.
- Question: I have been diagnosed with a prolapse of the bladder front wall and occasionally have protrusions from my vagina. Would I still be able to use one of these trainers?
- Our Answer:
According to the manufacturer, the trainer can help with prolapses as long as the vagina can actually have the trainer inserted. If you are in any doubt, we would suggest contacting your GP.
- Question: How long do I use it for?
- Our Answer:
Hi, The Athenafem is programmed for 15 minutes. You turn it on and it automatically turns off after 15 minutes. Many thanks
- Question: How long will it be before I get results?
- Our Answer:
Hi, It is recommended that you use the Athenafem for 15 minutes each day for 8 - 12 weeks. After that time, use it twice a week to maintain your control. Each person is different and some people notice a difference within 2 weeks. Many thanks
- Question: What does it feel like?
- Our Answer:
Hi, You should feel a slight tingling then almost a fluttering sensation and once it is at the right level you should feel a contraction and then a relax of the muscle. If you have the level too high it is uncomfortable so it is suggested that you start at level 5. Many thanks
- Question: Where does it go?
- Our Answer:
Hi, The Trainer is inserted into the vagina as you would a tampon. As the physiology of a vagina differs from woman to woman you will need to experiment with the trainer to find the correct position for you. You may also want to try using a water-based lubricant.
- Question: How quickly can I use it after childbirth?
- Our Answer:
Hi, In general, doctors recommend waiting 2 - 6 weeks but if you are comfortable and have had intercourse you should be fine.
- Question: I cannot feel if I am doing my exercises manually, will I be able to feel the Athenafem?
- Our Answer:
Hi, The Athenafem is designed to rehabilitate the pelvic floor through neuromuscular re-education. It may take time but you should get some sensation back in your muscles.
- Question: Can I use the Athenafem after surgery?
- Our Answer:
Hello, Please consult with your GP on this query.
- Question: How long should I wait after surgery?
- Our Answer:
Hi, You should wait until you have healed, typically 6 weeks after surgery. It is best to check with your GP or health care worker before starting if you are unsure. Many women have used the Athenafem after having a hysterectomy as incontinence can be brought about by organs shifting and settling back into place after the operation.
- Question: What else can be helped by the Athena Fem?
- Our Answer:
Hi, the Athena Fem can help with pelvic pain such as vulvadynia. The Athenafem helps to relax the muscle which is in spasm.
- Question: How long is each contraction?
- Our Answer:
The Athenafem has a sequence of 2.5 seconds contracting and 2.5 seconds relaxing. In a 15 minute session that is 180 contractions.
- Question: I am allergic to some metallic materials. Will I have a reaction to the Athenafem?
- Our Answer:
Hi, all of the physical properties of the Athenafem have been deemed safe by the US Federal Drug Administration. The metal used on the trainer is stainless steel.
- Question: Should I keep the same settings each time I use it?
- Our Answer:
You can leave your pelvic toner on the same setting as the previous session. This will help you see what level you had worked up to previously. However, please remember that our bodies can react in a different way on a different day. This can depend on lubrication and position, so remember what may be comfortable in one session may not be comfortable on another session - especially on a starting point. We would always suggest to start off the unit on one of the lower settings and then gradually turn it up as you need to. This way you never get a nasty surprise!
